Data planning

Choose data from your daily habits, not only the trip length

Maps and messages use relatively little data, while video, cloud backups and hotspot sharing can change the total quickly. Start with a daily estimate and multiply it by the days without reliable Wi-Fi.

01

Light use: about 0.3–0.7 GB per day

This range can cover messaging, email, maps, transport apps and occasional web searches when large downloads, video autoplay and photo backup are disabled.

02

Typical use: about 1–2 GB per day

Add regular social media, photo uploads, music streaming and short video clips. A 7–10 GB plan often gives a one-week traveler more flexibility than a very small allowance.

03

Heavy use: 3 GB or more per day

Long video calls, high-resolution streaming, remote work, laptop hotspot use and cloud backups can consume several gigabytes in a day. Check whether an unlimited plan reduces speed after a daily fair-use allowance.

04

Total-data versus daily-data plans

A total-data plan lets you move unused allowance between days. A daily-data plan resets or limits high-speed data each day and may continue at a reduced speed. Compare the actual high-speed allowance rather than relying on the word “unlimited” alone.

05

Reduce data use before buying more

Download offline maps and media over Wi-Fi, disable app updates and cloud photo backup, lower streaming quality and prevent laptops from automatic software downloads while tethered.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 GB enough for one week?

It can be enough for maps, messaging, email and moderate browsing when video and cloud backup are limited. Frequent social video, video calls or hotspot use can require more.

Is unlimited data always faster?

No. Some unlimited plans have a daily high-speed allowance, fair-use policy or reduced speed after heavy use. Compare those details before purchase.

Does hotspot use consume more data?

The same activity uses similar data, but connected laptops and tablets often run updates, backups and higher-resolution media automatically, increasing total consumption.
